"Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."
The one necessary thing in our lives is communion with Jesus Christ! This is more important than your life. However, how often do we neglect our relationship with Christ in order to pursue our plan, comfort, self-will?
When Jesus says, “There is need of only one thing” in Luke 10:42, He’s pointing to something far deeper than a preference between two sisters’ actions. He’s revealing the essence of discipleship; is being with Him—cultivating a heart that listens, loves, and dwells in His presence. Cultivating a relationship.
In that moment in the Gospel, Mary is not praised simply for sitting still. She’s praised for choosing intimacy over activity, silence over performance, and divine connection over distraction. “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You. (St. Augustine)”. "The heart of faith is personal relationship, not ceremonial excess or devotion. (Pope Leo, quote)”.
This teaching is fundamental:
the one thing necessary is
a love that listens for Christ.
To choose the better part is not just once in your life, but a daily choice of love. To choose intimacy with God, characterized by listening to his word and prioritizing a relationship with him. This intimate connection with God is the foundation for all other good works and is a priority that should not be neglected.
