Jesus seems to be anticipating and defending himself against any accusation of complicity by his statement that “the sons of this world are wiser in their own generation than the son of light.”
If men can show themselves so able in the pursuit of perishable blessings, why is that we are so half-hearted in seeking the kingdom?
Jesus praises only the steward’s shrewdness and regrets that such shrewdness should always be found in those who live for the present world
and not in those who seek the kingdom?
