Gather men from all nations
The question asked by a Jew: “Will those who are saved be few?” (a question often asked today), receives no direct answer. The Lord is saying that salvation belongs not to a race, but to those who accept Christ.
God wants to bring together people of every nation and tongue. Isaiah 66:18-21 gave symbolic expression of this totality which God desires and to which He will show His glory. God will send messengers forth from Jerusalem to take charge of the distant nations that have not seen His glory. Some of these nations will in turn act as God’s servants to proclaim God’s glory.
How can we avoid seeing in these texts an image of the Church, which Vatical Counsel II speaks as “a sign lifted up among the nations” and as a sign under which the scattered children of God may be gathered together?” The Church of our day must live by this vision: it is this vision that explains her missionary activity.
