Salt of the Earth and Light of the World.
Christians are not only to be “virtuous”,
they are to be salt, that is,
they are to rise the level of flavor of every human activity
and thus, transform it.
Salt is one of those primary realities that can contribute
to enchanting the quality of other things,
but that is itself hopeless once it goes bad.
Salt is not for itself, cannot be its own end;
It serves as humble yet somehow indispensable purpose.
The light has flows from a Christian’s presence should manifest
God’s joyous glory and induce men to return that glory to God in praise.
Since baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist has impressed the form
of Christ upon their lives, Christianity in a real sense, are the visibility
of God’s glory.
The presence of those Christians who are salt and light to others
demonstrates that God’s dwelling, which properly heaven, has become
embodied in a humble human house, made from the clay of the earth
but filled with God’s quickening breath.
How dear to Christ the ordinary things of the world, which nonetheless
also contain the mystery of the vitality and beauty, not only of this present
world, but of the world of God.
